Slider with metal overlay with CapTIvate

Hi,

I have a question regarding CapTIvate metal touch.

With CapTIvate, can we build a slider with metal overlay?

I couldn't find any description about that on Userguide.pdf.

Please tell me about this.

Regards,

Yuji

  • Yuri,
I am not sure if this is possible. Traditionally capacitive touch sliders would determine the location from the interaction with the finger or stylis with multiple electrodes. With metal touch there are discrete cavities made up of an electrode on the PCB, a spacer around the walls of the cavitiy, and the metal overlay. It is possible that you could have multiple electrodes within one cavity but I would be concerned that without enough support from the spacers you would actually dent the metal and it would not return to the original untouched position. I do not think the limitation is with the capacitance measurement method as much it is with the mechanics of a metal slider design.

  • Chris,

Thank you very much for your detailed reply.
I understood it. I guess it is difficult to keep balance between strength of metal plate( = thickness, material) and tuning of sensitivity...
    Thank you so much.

    Yuji
