MSP FET430 PIF with MSP-EXP430F5438 ??

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5438, MSP430F5438A

hi,

I recently got this MSP-EXP430F5438 experimenter board rev 0-02 (http://www.ti.com/tool/msp-exp430f5438) . I realised only lately that I need to have additional set of hardware for getting my code into the msp430f5438 controller..

Thus I'ld like to know, if its ok to go with buying the MSP FET430 PIF (parallel interface) for the purpose.. (http://www.ti.com/tool/MSP-FET430PIF) .. Does, MSP-FET430PIF support programming and debugging on this MSP-EXP430F5438 experimenter board?

If the msp-FET430PIF doesnt work, then what other options do i have? i came across the MSP-FET430UIF (USB interface), but its too expensive.. :(   so please do suggest me cheaper and more affordable options..

  • If you want to be really ghetto, you can actually get away with programming the MSP430F5438a with a Launchpad.

All you have to do is self-power the EXP board, then connect the RST and TEST to the corresponding pins on the FET portion of the Launchpad, then connect a GND pin from the board to a ground on Launchpad (so they have common ground and electrons can "flow").

I'm sure this is not sanctioned by TI at all, but hey a guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do. :)

    The MSP430 Hardware Tools User's Guide SLAU278H shows that the MSP-FET430PIF Supports all MSP430 and CC430 flash-based devices ('F1xx, 'F2xx, 'F4xx, 'F5xx, 'F6xx, 'G2xx, 'L092) (as does the MSP-FET430UIF).

The MSP-FET430PIF and MSP-EXP430F5438 both support 4-wire JTAG so it should work.
