Hard Reset MSP Gang Programmer

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-GANG

Hi MSP430 Team,

I have a customer who is having some issues with their MSP Gang programmer. They want to perform a factory reset on the device, is this possible? If so how is it done? Let me know if you want more details about their problem, there may be a better way to solve it than by resetting it.

Thanks,

Barend

  • Barend,

    Which MSP430 are they using?

in general MSP430 doesn't have a "factory reset" for devices. Typically you just erase the whole device and it is as if it came from the factory. Some of the older MSP430s however, have some calibration information stored in INFOA memory. So if you delete INFOA on these devices, you wouldn't be able to get that information back.
  • Hi Jace,

Thanks for your quick reply! The customer isn't asking about resetting the MSP430, they want to reset the Gang Programmer. Is this possible?

    Thanks,
    Barend
  • Hi Barend,

Thanks for posting. The customer is wanting to clear the MSP-GANG itself into a condition like it comes from the factory? I think a better approach would be to elaborate more on the specific issue that they are seeing with the MSP-GANG - including any specific error messages that they get, their HW and FW version of MSP-GANG, and screenshots of their setup? You can find HW and FW info for MSP-GANG by going in the GUI to About > About and taking a screenshot.

Have they tried running the self-test? (Found in the GUI under Tools > Self Test). If they find any failures in the self-test, please attach the results file to your post.

Hopefully additional information will help us to diagnose their particular issue and recommend the best solution.

    Regards.
    Katie
  • Hi Katie,

After some trouble shooting they have discovered that the new programmer’s VCC becomes loaded down to 2.3 volts during programming. In their application of in circuit programming, they rely on the programmer to supply VCC. If they supply VCC the programmer works. The specific error code they are seeing is "err 23 MCU".

Another MSP430 Gang Programmer they have is able to supply VCC during programming.

Looking at the label on the bottom of the programmers. The working programmer has Hardware Version 1.02 and the non-working is 1.04.

Are you aware of any changes that have happened to the power supply circuitry between the two versions?

Please see below for more details about the two GANG Programmers:

    Old working MSP

    Partial working MSP
This unit I newly bought I created an image but keep failing on err 23:

Let me know if this information is helpful, and I'll be looping in the customer to provide more details.

    Thanks,
    Barend

  • Hi Barend,

Thanks for the additional information - this is helping to narrow down the issue. I have a few more questions:

    1. How many targets are connected to the MSP-GANG at once?

    2. How much current does each target board consume max?

    3. Additionally, do they have the MSP-GANG power supply connected to an outlet, or are they powering the MSP-GANG only off of USB power?

    4. In the MSP-GANG GUI, what is selected for the maximum current for each target (30mA or 50mA)?

I am asking because there is a limit on how much current the MSP-GANG can supply - from the user's guide www.ti.com/lit/pdf/slau358 section 1.3 Hardware Installation:

  • Hi Barend,

Are you still encountering the issue? Is there more information from the customer, or should the thread be closed?

    Regards,
    Katie
  • Hi Katie,

I appreciate the help you've given so far! I haven't heard back from the customer, but I know one of my contacts is out of office until the 29th. I'll ping them again when he returns and follow up here.

    Thanks!

    Barend

  • Hi Katie,

I haven't heard back from the customer, so I'm ok closing this thread. If I get a follow up I'll just reference this thread on the next post!

    Thanks,
    Barend
