MSP430G2553: MSP EXP430G2 Application UART Problem [Windows 10]

Part Number: MSP430G2553
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-EXP430FR2311, MSP-EXP430FR2433, MSP-EXP430FR4133

Hello,

This is my very first post to this forum so sorry in advance for any kind of noob usage experience :)

I 've been playing with MSP EXP430G2 Rev 1.5 Launchpad for a while but I have detected an issue with the Application UART on Windows 10 (I don't want to mean issue is caused by Windows 10 driver, I wanted to emphasize the OS I am using).

The issue is, Application UART is very unstable. This I mean, I need to unplug/replug several times before I can successfully get a character sent from my laptop via Termite terminal (I've tried TerraTerm and RealTerm also, result is the same).

I am very sure that the issue is not caused by the MSP430G2553 device installed on the launchpad because I tried a loopback connection bypassing the G2553 and result is the same.

Also, I tried using a FTDI USB to Serial Adapter by disconnecting the G2553's Tx/Rx pins from Application UART and connecting them to the FTDI adapter and voila, all success, G2553 can get what I send from PC flawlessly.

I really like to play this Launchpad and the device, I would like some kind of firmware update for the Emulation part of the Launchpad or a possible Windows driver update. Any specific questions, please ask and I will answer for you to further analyze the issue.

Thanks in advance!

  • Hello Ugur,

Welcome to E2E! We've had other users experience issues with this LaunchPad on Windows 10. I searched the forum and the following threads popped up.

It appears that the issue is related to how Windows 10 handles the older eZ-430 debugger on the MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad. My recommendation would be to switch to one of our newer MSP430 FRAM LaunchPads, which have the newer (better supported) ez-FET debugger. These include the MSP-EXP430FR2433, MSP-EXP430FR4133, and MSP-EXP430FR2311 LaunchPads.

Also, you may find our newly-released eBook highlighting 25 basic functions implemented on our MSP430FR2xx devices to be quite helpful.

    Regards,

  • Hello James,

Thanks for your kind reply. I am very upset to hear that since buying a new Launchpad will cost time and money (I live in Turkey). I will mark your answer as "This resolved my issue" but actually it will not solve. I will mark it because it seems I don't have any other choice. I was expecting a firmware update like solution to my launchpad.

    Thanks&Regards.
  • Hello Ugur,

I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I would recommend keeping your MSP-EXP430G2 LaunchPad and just using the FTDI USB to Serial Adapter for the UART communication. You can still use the on-board debugger for your code development. You can always order one of the FRAM LaunchPads (mentioned above) for future development. Depending on what you're doing, the eBook (mentioned above) may already have most of the functionality already implemented.

Thank you for marking the thread resolved too. I'll go ahead and close the thread on my side.

    Regards,

    James
