TM4C123G LaunchPad Driver problems

I have researched this and I haven't found a previous post where the problem exactly matches what I've got going on.  As the subject indicates, I have the new Tiva LaunchPad and I'm having problems installing the Com and ICDI drivers.  When I plug it in, it shows the ICDI, but no COM ports.  I have downloaded essentially the same driver (spmc016) and have followed the same directions that are listed everywhere (let Windows fail, then try installing manually).

To verify my sanity, I tried the install on a different computer and it appeared to work fine; i.e., multiple COM ports as well as the ICDI shows up in device manager and manual install works as expected. But my laptop fails.  Why?

Laptop: Windows 7, Home Premium; Intel Core i5-2430M CPU @ 2.40GHz 2.40 GHz; 4.00GB RAM; 64-bit

  • Just for kicks, I decided to try and debug an example project to see if maybe I didn't need to install a driver and oddly enough, I still do.  Problem still present.

  • After some thought and an entire day of work, I have the answer:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit edition does not appear to be compatible with the device.

I saved all my goodies off my laptop and set them aside.

I downloaded Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit edition from my MSDN account as well as the Windows 7 USB DVD Tool to put the OS ISO onto a thumbdrive for install. (Ask me how I know that installing from a DVD on this particular laptop doesn't work...)

I completely wiped my laptop and put Window 7 Ultimate.

I then scrounged around the office for a USB Wifi stick because out-of-the-box Windows doesn't have a driver for the Ethernet adapter. USB Wifi, FTW.  I pulled down as many Windows updates as I could.

I then went to the ASUS tech page for a few additional drivers not available through Windows update. (SMB Bus and a few others.)

I went to an Intel tech page to get updated drivers for my graphics chipset.

I of course immediately replaced Windows Internet Explorer with my beloved Google Chrome.

After all my devices in Device Manager looked as happy as they could be:

          I plugged in my Launchpad.

I saw multiple devices pop up in Device Manager!

I then followed the instructions for Stellaris driver installation.

No more unhappy devices in Device Manager.

Now I just have to go get all the software packages needed for Launchpad development that I lost when I re-installed Winblows.

Completely nuked my machine for my TI Launchpad.

         Worth it.

  • Might "lesson learned" be: "Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit edition" is "NRND?"  (some resonance ... here)

  • I have a problem which seems to have a similar cause.

I'm running IAR Embedded Workbench 6.4 Kickstart on 2 machines, Windows 7 Ultmate 32 bit and Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

On the 32 bit Windows all drivers installed OK and I can run debugger, breakpoints and all.

On 64 bit Windows the drivers installed OK, superficially at least, but the debugger refuses to download my code. The following window pops up

Needless to say the loader file does actually exist.

This is a show stopper as I've no intention of trashing my disk as the previous correspondent did. Right now I cannot develop anything on my new Tiva device on Windows 64 bit.

  • Well, this is embarassing.

My Tiva launchpad was connected to the PC via an unpowered USB hub. On a hunch I connected Tiva directly to the PC and, dah-dah, it now works!

    Lesson obvious

  • You could trash your disk just to be extra sure... :)

BTW, the TI-RTOS is one of the easiest RTOS's I've ever configured.  And it's free! Thanks, TI.

  • Hello there,

    I use Windows7 professional 64bit..............

First time I have got the same problem like you with my TM4C123GXL board..! but after a long time effort I got an another solution of this problem. Just go to by this link : " http://www.ti.com/tool/stellaris_icdi_drivers " and download the SW-ICDI-Drivers. By clicking the red download button a zip file will be downloaded named spmc016.zip. Just unzip the folder then you will get real driver files for this launchpad :). Now go to the "Computer Management" then select "Device manager" then update the three "Incircuit Debug Interface" one by one using the option "Browse for driver software on your computer" with the location of the unzipped folder. Remember, you must have to put a tick mark in the "Include Subfolders" check box. Hope you will enjoy this.... :)
