Some requests/wishes I have for the future

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ENERGIA

Hi everyone,

So I have a request for the future. Don't know if it was best to post in this forum or the CCS forum. It's related mostly to Tivaware and Tiva documentation.

The MSPWare adds into the "create new project" a template. I simply select the template when creating a project and it's good to go. It has some basic includes, the paths all set up and some basic code (the MSP430 has the standard of disabling the watchdog at the beginning).
Could something similar be added? Most of the time you have to import a example and edit it, but a empty template with the same options as the examples could be made! It could even include in the beginning the clock set (could maybe be a problem due to 2 different functions).
It's a very basic request but I think it would be very useful IMO.

Another thing I have to ask... why is the MSPWare in the app center and the Tivaware isn't? Having the Tivaware installed from the App center in CCS would allow to set automatically the CCS symbols for the Tivaware related paths and files and aid the implementation of a working template that could be used with a workspace in any location? Plus it would be handy!

Now about the cloud. I know MSP430 is in the front with that in here. The CCS online tool is for the CCS team side and that will probably take a long time.
But what I found really handy is how the info is all organized on the TI resource explorer online. I just wanted to check MSPware, no download, just browse! Let me check the libraries, I open the folder, see right away "Driver library", in this case see right away the desired family and right there in my face is "User guide" and "API Programmer's Guide". I think better than that only if someone came to my house and slap the guides/documents on my face.
Same for the part info, easily browse the family, find the part and I'm given access to the reference manual, datasheet, specific code examples (though in DRM).
All the boards have their folder with documents and examples too.
You get the idea, I really love how the info is there, all compacted and easy to find. No need to be asking "Where are the examples, where is the documents", they are not scattered or with long and complicated names (in Tivaware the docs have their version name and short name which I understand why). For reference it's this what I am talking about http://dev.ti.com/tirex/#/Package/MSPWare
Is there any idea to add Tivaware into the online resource explorer? If so, any general ETA?

Just some requests/wishes I have. Not exactly critical to using the Tiva and Tivaware, but I think would aid people starting with Tiva, using a new compiler and getting the include paths and everything right can be hard and demoralizing. Finding info can also be a daunting task which a lot of people try to avoid when it takes too long and straight come here asking where to search.
I hope the TM4C team takes into consideration as something to improve in the future and not as a critic as most of what I requested came to the MSP430 not too long ago.

  • Good post, Luis. And we note that certain "others" here have earlier noted (and protested) the scatter-site method of, "Necessary Data Location!"

Your opening para. is quite good - yet never specifically targets/mentions Tiva/TivaWare by name!    (that's an easy add-on edit for you)

Sales - more often than not - result from "Comfort & Convenience" - neither high in presence - this vendor's Tiva Data Organization.     Hiding and/or obscuring vital data may (sometimes) make sense - but not here - and surely not now...

It appears that Data for this class MCU is stored with great variability (I.e. all over) - likely for the convenience of the vendor - not so much - for user-clients!

  • Oh, it was a editing mistake. I did have it referred but re-reading and then edit ended up with me erasing it and not replacing it.

There are already tools/ways to have the data more organized so maybe in the future Tivaware/Tiva will adopt the method

Yet as you stated earlier - MSP does such (related data organizing all together) just fine!

Why then - w/that "model of success" would, "Scatter site "method" be chosen here?"    (understandable only to insiders - or to those who keep (and regularly amend) "cheat sheets" so that they (with luck) can find today's, "moving target!")

Really - does it make any sense that (so many here) must resort to "Google" to find this forum's MCU Data, App Notes & other critical guides?

  • For what I know the access online to TI resource explorer is very recent. MSP also had and has scattered info but now it also has that method. I also don't know for how long that info is organized in the offline TI resource explorer but for what I've been told it's not that long ago. Now more in-dept info I can't really say, I basically just use Energia with MSP430 for hobby projects so I don't have to learn the hardware
  • Luis,

We really appreciate the amount of effort you put into documenting these requests.

I agree with you and cb1, that these updates will make it easier to find information in one place. There are discussions about integrating TivaWare into Resource Explorer and the cloud tools. I am not sure about the timeline though. I will pass your requests to the team.

    Thanks,
    Sai
