DRV8434A: DRV8434APWPR can replace DRV8424PWPR ?

Part Number: DRV8434A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8424EVM, , DRV8424,

Hi Team,

Customer would like to know is DRV8434APWPR able to replace DRV8424PWPR? Pins 19 to 21 of the chip are not used.

8424: 19: TOFF, 20: DECAY1, 21: DECAY0, these three pins are for setting and controlling PWM

8434A: 19: STL_REP, 20: TRQ_CNT/STL_TH, 21: STL_MODE, these three feet are stall detection,

8434A does not have the 3 pins of 8424, how to set and control the PWM mode?

Thanks,

Annie

  • Annie,

DRV8434PWPR is pin to pin compatible with DRV8424PWPR.

DRV8434APWPR is different than DRV8434PWPR and SRV8424PWPR. DRV8434APWPR supports stall detection function with analog torque_count output pin.

Since DR8434A supports the stall detection function. The decay mode is the smart tune ripple control decay mode.  Don't need DECAY0/1 and TOFF to setup the decay mode.

    Wang Li

  • Hi Li,

Under the same parameter conditions, DRV8434APWPR is about 1/3 slower than DRV8424PWPR. Could you have any suggestion for this case?

    Thank,

    Annie

  • Annie,

Do you mean the motor speed is slow with the same STEP frequency?

    Regards,

    Wang Li

  • Hi Wang Li,

Yes, In the case of the same frequency, it is about 20% slower, and the acceleration and deceleration will not increase the speed.

    Thanks,

    Annie

  • Annie,

Do they test the speed with DRV8424EVM and DRV8434AEVM?

Can you share the STEP pin signal and OUTPUT current waveform here?

    Regards,

    Wang Li

  • Hi Wang Li,

Customer used his own boards. STL_MODE = 0. When the motor is moving or locked, TRQ_CNT/STL_TH is always 0 and there is no voltage change. TL_REP is always 0 when it is locked, it has not changed to high, and the pull has been added.

    Thanks,

    Annie

  • Annie,

DRV8424 and DRV8434A are not pin to pin compatible device. Please make sure the device is DRV8434A, not DRV8424. BTW, DRV8424 doesn't support stall detection and doesn't have STL_MODE pin and TRQ_CNT pin.

If they put DRV8434A on their board, what is the motor spinning speed? Does STEP pin signal have jittering?

    Regards,

    Wang

  • Hi Wang,

It is DRV8434A. Rotation speed is 100. STEP has no jitter. STL_REP is always low when the motor is blocked. TRQ_CNT/STL_TH voltage is almost 0. FAULT is high.

    Thanks,

    Annie

  • Annie,

    Let me clarify your statement:

The driver is set to Torque Count mode (STL_MODE = 0), motor speed is 100 step/s with full step setting. TRQ_CNT/STL_TH voltage is zero. STL_REP is low.

Please help me confirm the test condition detail: motor speed is 100 step/s with full step setting.

After confirm the test condition: the only abnormal is the RQ_CNT/STL_TH voltage is zero. Please check and share the motor coil current with 100 full step/s.

BTW, I attached the DRV8434A GUI user's guide here as reference for stall detection setting. Please check page 10 "3.3.2 Stall Detection" section.
