DRV8316: Continuous current

Hi Team,

Good day.

I have something to verify here about the power consumption of the motor driver. The device DRV8316 has a peak current of 8-A winding current for motor.

From page 16 of its datasheet states that it has minimum input overcurrent protection of 15A. So, I could say that the driver can handle up to 14.9A continuous input current. Let's say the power supply voltage is 24V, the power consumption would be 358W. Am I right?

    Since this is an integrated FET device, it is not meant to handle a power level that high. It can drive up to 8A peak and 35V max, so theatrically you could use it up to 280W. However we recommend this for 12V or 24V systems. Higher currents (over 4A) will experience larger CSA errors amongst other unwanted effects. You will also be limited by thermals of the device (may experience unintended FET switching, ect).

    We have a great TI Precision Labs video on how to select a integrated FET device vs a gate driver.

    In your case, it's best to stick with a gate driver device.
