MCF8316AEVM: No detection of EVM

Part Number: MCF8316AEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MCF8316A

Hello team,

The GUI is unable to detect the target board in my customer. The "Connecting to target..." does not advance. The bar is moving from left to right a number of times.

Please let me know if they have any items that they should check.

Note that the GUI is detecting the COM port, and the GUI was downloaded from https://dev.ti.com/gallery/view/BLDC/MCF8316A_GUI/.

Beet regards,

Shotaro

  • Hi Sakai-san,

    A few initial questions:

    1. Did you run the GUI in your browser or did you download the offline installer?
    2. When you plug in the USB from the EVM to the PC, do you see the red LED D6 light up on the board?
    3. If using the online GUI, could you try uninstalling the TI Cloud Agent by running the uninstaller in C:\Users\username\TICloudAgent\, then reinstalling it by following the instructions after launching the GUI in your web browser again.

    Regards,
    Eric C.

  • Hi Eric-san,

Thank you for supporting. With using offline GUI, MCF8316A EVM was connected.

But the fault status does not turn green when my customer press "clear" button. (Multiple attempts)

Only one MPET IPD fault [MPET_IPD_fault] does not change from red to green.

When he changes the Break torg switch from right to left, the MPET IPD fault[MPET_IPD_fault] now turns green, but now the IPD T2[IPD_T2_fault] turns red.

The result was the same when the motor was changed.

    The below is FAULTS CONFIGURATION.

    Best regards,

    Shotaro

How to handle this issue? Do you have any idea?

  • Hello Sakai-san,

Eric will respond soon on this thread!

    Thanks,

  • Hi Sakai-san,

After powering up the EVM and connecting to the GUI, could you please ask them to try the following:

    1. Click on the "Read All Registers" button and wait until pop-up message indicating all 77 registers have been read.
    2. Restore Default Register settings by going to Start Guided Tuning -> Essential Controls -> Recommended Default Values -> Restore Default Values
    3. Enable the "Auto Read Fault Status" and "Auto Read Motor Status" buttons, then click on the "Clear" Fault buttons:
    4. You should see the Fault status turn green and the nFault red LED D2 turn off on the EVM. The motor status should display MOTOR_IDLE for the Algorithm State
    5. Follow the remaining instructions of the Essential Controls section and try to spin the motor in closed loop.

  • Hello Eric-san,

I want to update the customer status.

The issue I informed to you was resolved, but another issue is happen. Can you give me your thought?

When the I2C control mode is used and the horizontal bar is changed, the motor does not rotate.

*The status is motor_IDL, and the VM is not changed from 0V.

**He changed the torg switch on the circuit, but there was no change.

    Best regards,

    Shotaro

  • Shotaro,

Eric should be getting back to you Monday, sorry for the delay.

  • Hi Sakai-san,

VM should not be reporting 0V in the Motor Status panel if the device is powered up correctly. Could you please help ask the customer to verify that they've connected power supply of 4.5V to 35V across VBAT and PGND? What supply voltage are they using?

Could they also verify that the GUI is properly connected to the EVM by checking the bottom left status. It should say "Hardware Connected". The red D6 LED should blink rapidly while the Auto Read Fault/Motor Status buttons are enabled.

Please also ask the customer to configure everything like they did, up until setting the I2C Speed Command Percentage. Then from the top menu, click on "File -> Save Registers" and provide the register settings .json file to me.

    Regards,
    Eric C.
