DRV8302: AVDD inquiry

Part Number: DRV8302
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8312, DRV8353

Hello Guys,

Good day.

Our customer has the following application and wants to confirm if AVDD of DRV8302 can be use in such manner:

"I need to use drv8302 together with drv8312 in a project.

In the project, MCU (3.3V), drv8302 and drv8312 will be used together.

The drv8302's buck converter will feed the MCU, providing 3.3V energy.

drv8312 also needs 12V.

Main supply ie Pvdd = 48V;

Drv8302 has an internal regulator to feed the gate pins. But not in drv8312.

Can I use the Avdd pin of the drv8302 to feed the Gvdd pin of the drv8312?

In summary, can the energy in the Avdd pin of the drv8302 also feed the Gvdd pin of the drv8312?

Two different motors will be driven, this is exactly why drv8302 and drv8312 are used at the same time.

I think the drv8312 needs two separate power supplies."

Thanks and regards,

Art

  • Hello Art,

    The DRV8302 AVDD is a 6V supply which seems out of range for the DRV8312 GVDD pin. Also the datasheet specifies that the AVDD pin is not specified to drive external circuitry.

    However, the DRV8302 GVDD regulator is the correct voltage to supply the DRV8312 GVDD pin. DRV8302 GVDD can supply up to 30mA RMS. 30mA needs to include the DRV8302 average gate drive current for the high-side and low-side MOSFETs *and* the current consumption of the DRV8302 GVDD pin.

    • Iave = Qg x fpwm x N, where N is the number of MOSFETs switching per cycle
      • Trap control: N = 2
      • Asynchronous Sine or FOC: N = 4
      • Synchronous Sine or FOC: N = 6

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • Thanks for the prompt response Matt. Below are the feedback from the customer:

    We will use DRV8353 and DRV8302 for mass production. With Texas brand mosfets.

    DRV8353's current ratings seem lower than DRV8302's.

    Datasheet information for DRV8302;

    1.7-A Source and 2.3-A Sink Gate Drive Current
    capability

    "Datasheet information for DRV8353;

    – 50-mA to 1-A peak source current
    – 100-mA to 2-A peak sink current

    as writing.

    My concern is:

    We will buy 6 MOSFETs from texas instruments to drive Motor with FOC.

    DRV8353 product; Will any model we choose be fully compatible with the mosfet?

    What should we pay attention to?

    Can we use the drv8353 product with any texas brand 6 mosfet with peace of mind? Is it compatible?

    (Note; as you can guess, all 6 mosfets are the same series and model. But can we use 6 of any Texas brand mosfet? "

    Thanks and regards,

  • Hello Art,

    DRV8353 has a lower maximum gate drive current than DRV8302.

    However, most customers end up using gate drive currents in the 10-100mA range. Please see this E2E FAQ for more details on how to configure the gate drive setting (IDRIVE) for a given MOSFET: https://e2e.ti.com/support/motor-drivers-group/motor-drivers/f/motor-drivers-forum/796378/faq-selecting-the-best-idrive-setting-and-why-this-is-essential

    DRV8353 is compatible with virtually all MOSFETs that we have seen on the market and will only be limited in the following cases:

    • driving multiple parallel MOSFETs at once (i.e. using 12 MOSFETs instead of 6)
    • driving very high PWM frequency (i.e. >50kHz)
    • we do not recommend using leaded MOSFETs (TO-220 package) because this can introduce a lot of parasitic inductance

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • Hello Art,

    Do you have any further questions on this thread?

    Thanks,

  • Hello Matt,

    It's okay to close for now. I'll just raised a new one in case customer sent a follow-up inquiry.

    Thanks
