DRV10975: Can the DRV10975Z use a TVS for the zener? (And related zener questions)

Part Number: DRV10975

I'm looking for a zener to use for the DRV10975Z in 5V mode. Can I use a zener TVS for this? I'm unlikely to use a 6V zener elsewhere on my board. I'm much more likely to use a 5V TVS with a 6V breakdown voltage and high power rating.

Also, can you provide further clarification on the zener specs?

1. What is the duration that the zener has to be able to dissipate 2.5W?

2. What is the maximum voltage allowable while carrying 2.5W? (Most zeners hit their rated voltage at <20mA)

3. Is 6V ±5% really required? 6.2V ±5% zeners are about ten times more common.

  • Hello John,

Thanks for the question and for posting to the MD forum. The Zener diode on the DRV10975Z is used to limit any possible voltage spikes on VREG when the device goes into sleep mode. So if the device will not be used in sleep mode this will Zener diode will not be necessary.

You may use a higher rated Zener or TVS diode as long as it keeps the VREG voltage below the pins absolute maximum value of 7V. The reason that Zener diodes are recommended over TVS diodes is because of Zener diodes ability to act as a regulator and make the voltage more stable. Unfortunately I do not have a spec for the duration that the Zener must dissipate 2.5W. I hope this helps!

    Best,

    Isaac
