DRV8706-Q1: Low side current sensing application usage with DRV8706-Q1

Part Number: DRV8706-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8705-Q1

The DRV8705S-Q1 has low-side current sense amplifier capability and

the DRV8706S-Q1 can be used for inline or high-side as the amplifier has a high common-mode range.

1) Is it same inline current sensing with phase-sensing?

2) If an application is in low side current sensing application with half bridge, would DRV8706-Q1 be used by DRV8705-Q1 interchangeablly?

3) Considering the datasheets of both datasheets, are there any considerations in the low side current sensing application?

  • Hello!

    1) Yes, inline sensing is the same as phase sensing.

    2) Devices are pin-to-pin compatible.  They can we used interchangeably.

    3) I am not sure I understand the question.  Can you please add some more comments here on the concerns?

  • I consider of negative voltage of maximum rating or ESD rating when the operationg voltage of Sx is changed.

Even though design and manufacture of two chips except opamps, the negative surge could effect on low side sensing amp  by applications compared to phase sense amp.

I thought whether the transient 1us amplifier input pin voltage of DRV8706 (negative surge) will be higher than one of DRV8705.

But it is not from my expectation.

If the design and protection structure, how is one of DRV8706 (negative surge) better?

How is the parameter to measure in semiconductor level?

  • Hello,

I understand now.  Let me investigate.

  • Hello,

In the DRV8705-Q1, low-side sense is used and the amplifier input is connected to the SLx pins.  The rating for SLx and amplifier pins are therefore the same.

In the DRV8706-Q1, if inline sense is used, the amplifier input is connected to SHx pin which is rated for -5V.
