DRV8706H-Q1EVM: SPI Communication with DRV8706H-Q1

Part Number: DRV8706H-Q1EVM

Hello,

I have a DRV8706H-Q1 evaluation board with M430F2617T controller. Here, I would like to control the Motor Driver through an external controller by SPI Communication and break the connection between M430F2617T and DRV8706H-Q1. I would like to know the hardware changes that has to be made in-order to control the DRV8706H-Q1 by an external controller.

I have removed the following resistors that connects the DRV with M430F2617T still unable to communicate with the external controller:

nSCS, SCLK, SDI, SDO, IN1/EN, nHIZ1, IN2/PH, nHIZ2, nSLEEP, DRVOFF, SO.

Looking forward for the quick response.

Thanks and Regards,

  • Hello!

It is a US holiday today.  I have assigned to a member of my team.  Expect a follow-up tomorrow.

    Thank You!

  • Hi Kehr,

    Looking forward for the response.

    Thank you,

  • Dhanush,

Pulling the resistors and making connections to external board should be the answer, but I am a little confused on how you plan to "communicate" with the DRV8706H device.  There is no SPI interface on the DRV8706H.  You would need the DRV8706S.

    Ryan

  • Hi Kehr,

    Thanks for your valuable time.

I would like to know what is the difference between DRV8706H-Q1 and DRV8706S-Q1. Also, can you please clarify that is there any need to purchase DRV8706S-Q1 EVM or is it possible to do any hardware changes to my existing board i.e DRV8706H for SPI Communication through an external controller.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Dhanush B N

  • As per the attached picture of DRV8706H-Q1, I can see the SPI Pins(nSCS, SCLK, SDi, SDO) which have been highlighted in RED color. Please confirm that if these pins are connected to the DRV8706H-Q1.

  • Hello,

Please find this table in the datasheet.  It is NOT possible to control the "H" EVM with SPI.  You will need a "S" EVM.

We use the same board hardware for DRV8705S and DRV8705H, that is why you see the labels for SPI.

    Ryan

  • Hi Kher,

    Thanks for the confirmation.

I have upgraded to DRV8718S-Q1 board and able to communicate through SPI.

In DRV8718S-Q1 board, I see GHx go high(12V) for all half bridges as soon as nSLEEP is set to 1 without setting any of the Control Registers. Is this the expected value? if yes, can you please explain why it is so?

    Below is my test setup:

The DRV8718S-Q1 board is powered up by external supply of 12V without connecting the motor.

  • Dhanush,

To actually enable the high-side FETs, the GHx pins should be greater than 12V as the FETs are NMOS.  If enabled using control registers, you will see 12V (VM) + VCP on the gate.
