DRV8805EVM: Hybrid stepper motor is heating up while driving with the help of DRV8805

Part Number: DRV8805EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8805

We have gone through the previous issues with DRV8805 EVM board and as per updated suggestions, we have connected the hybrid motor winding as

OUT1 : A+ ; OUT3:A-

OUT2: B+ ; OUT4: B-

COMM (Both) : VCLAMP

Our motor works from 12V DC to 24 VDC and consumes max current 2A.

Within 10 min my motor as well as IC heats up and it toggles between nFault high-low.

Kindly suggest the solution.

  • Hello,

Is this on the EVM or own board?  What is the ambient temperature during this testing?  The indication with auto-recovering FAULT is thermal protection.  Only way to improve this is more copper in the board or external heatsink.

If own board, are you making sure the PowerPad on the bottom of the board is soldered to PCB?

    Regards,

    Ryan

  • This is done on EVM board, Ambient temperature is 20 degree celcius, and after auto recovering Board still keeps going into thermal protection mode for once in every 10 sec after heating.

    Kindly suggest the solution.

  • Hello,

It appears you are pushing the limits of the IC with your motor.  The only way to solve this is with external heatsinking.  Can you try adding a heatsink on top of the package?
