DRV8305: Double H-bridge configuration

Hi Experts,

Good day.

We would like to ask your assistance on this query from Cx, designing two DRV8305 with two H-bridge and one BLDC being controlled with MCU.

Does the three pins for the current sensors can be connected together as shown below?

Thank you for your guidance.

Regards,
Archie A.

  • Hi Archie,

    Both architectures are valid.

You can always tie the low-side sources together to measure total current though the H-bridge as shown in #1, but you won't be able to determine current per half-bridge. If this architecture is used, then you'll be using the CSAs on one of the DRV8305 devices, and the  CSAs on the other DRV8305 will need to be disabled by tying the SPx and SNx inputs together and floating the SOx output.

In #2, this will give more current feedback per each half bridge. You can monitor each half-bridge current to determine motor states. Every CSA will be used.

As a curiosity, how is position feedback implemented for the DC motors, or is this an open-loop implementation of spinning the DC motors?

    Thanks,
    Aaron

  • Hello Aaron,

Thanks for your answer. It now clarified the customer's ideas. The feedback is made by a torque sensor and Hall sensors.

    Thank you.

  • Got it. Thank you!

Can you mark the thread as resolved if the answer clarified the customer's ideas?

    Thanks,
