BOOSTXL-DRV8323RS: GUI issues with MSP-EXP430F5529LP

Part Number: BOOSTXL-DRV8323RS
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BOOSTXL-DRV8323RH

Hello,

I have the BOOSTXL-DRV83233RS and the MSP_EXP430F5529P together and I am trying to use the GUI. I followed the user's guide but I am having issues getting a motor spinning.

Right now I am able to see the COM port of the MSP:

But when I try enabling the driver using sensorless I get this error ("MOTOR set Failed") on the bottom left:

I am kind of stuck here until further notice. I might try to get the CCS method working but the GUI would be a lot nicer for evaluation.

  • Hi Jerome,

Are you using the BOOSTXL-DRV8323RH or BOOSTXL-DRV8323RS? Are you selecting the right EVM in the home menu? Did you flash the sensorless firmware onto the MCU before selecting it?

I see a green connected LED on the bottom left. When you select the right device, it should automatically detect the firmware you are using (i.e. Sensorless Motor). Does this happen?

Can you try the other COM port? You should power the EVM on before plugging the USB into your laptop and running the GUI.

    Thanks,
    Aaron

  • Hi, it looks like I forgot to flash the firmware onto the MCU properly. It seems to be working as expected now.

    Thanks!

  • One more thing about the GUI. Why is it that the moment the GUI recognizes the MSP430 with a certain Firmware (Sensored or Sensorless), I can't access the SPI Register Map:

    After connecting Launchpad with BOOSTXL-DRV8323RS:

I just want to be able to tweak control registers on the fly. For now, I'll probably have to do it through Code Composer Studio, but let me know if there's something I can do to get the SPI Register GUI working.

  • Hi Jerome,

The tab with the "Pencil" on the left is the SPI register map. I am surprised it disappeared after it connected.

Can you ensure that you power on the EVM first and connect to the laptop before launching the GUI?

On the home page, when the status shows "Connected" on the bottom left corner, does the flashed firmware become recognized? I.e. if you flash "Sensorless", and you click DRV8323RS as your launchpad, does the firmware automatically show up as "Sensorless Motor"?

Also this might be a redundant question, but you have the BOOSTXL-DRV8323RS correct? Not the BOOSTXL-DRV8323RH?

    Thanks,
    Aaron
