DRV8718-Q1: Is it possible to use both DRV8718+DRV8714 to drive one motor?

Part Number: DRV8718-Q1

Hi team,

I would like to know whether this is possible: use DRV8714 to drive one half-bridge and use DRV8718 to drive one half-bridge, thus combines a H-bridge to control a motor.

Thanks!

  • Hi Iris,

Thank you for your interest in DRV8714/8718. It is possible to use 2 DRV to drive one half bridge.

However DRV8714 has 4 channels half bridges and 8718 has 8. I am wondering whether you have special reason to split into 2 DRVs?

    regards

    Shinya Morita

  • Hello Shinya,

Because the number of motors in customer's project is 12, so customer thought it is a most cost effective way to combine 8718 and 8714 and no half-bridge driver is wasted.

The most important problem is: can we achieve normal diagnosis and protection? From my understanding, we can use programming configuration to realize it. Please help to check whether there is any risk.

    Thanks!

  • Iris,

Please draw out the motor configuration the customer would like to use.  I am not clear on the configuration.

You can draw out on paper and take a picture if that is easier.

    Regards,

    Ryan

  • Hi Ryan,

please see the picture as attached.

  • Iris,

If every motor is connected like this, why would the customer not use 3x DRV8718 to drive 12 motors (4 each with 1x DRV8718).  I understand they would not have current sensing for all motors and would have to use some external current sensing unless they want to use 6x DRV8714.

I am still not understanding why they would need to share across devices with an even number of motors.  That is my confusion.

    Regards,

    Ryan

  • Ryan,

I will check with customer about your question which I am also confused because of the number is 12. But if suppose customer have some reason to evaluate this configuration, do you have any comment about the possibility to use in this way and any concern?

    Thanks.

  • Iris,

I am sure it can be made to work across ICs, but I don't think it should be done that way if it can be avoided.

    Regards,

    Ryan
