DRV8353RS-EVM: looking for 60v, 40A Sensored BLDC Motor Evaluation Kit

Hello,

Good morning we are a start up company from India and looking for evaluation kit board for 3 phase sensored BLDC Motor driver with integrated MOSFET which need to support upto continuous 60v and 40 amps.

we referred the DRV8353RS-EVM datasheet. but this driver is not compatible for peak current 40A.

Kindly suggest us the suitable motor driver evaluation kit.

    I've assigned this thread to a team member and we'll aim to give you a response shortly. 

    Most likely will have an answer for you by middle of next week, but the devices I'd suggest you to look into are DRV8300 and still DRV835x, since they're 100V-rated parts. 

    • The acceptable motor phase current (40A) should really be determined by other system-level factors (like MOSFET Rdson, Rshunt, and protection monitor's register settings), so if the EVM itself isn't capable of the wattage, then there may be a need to design a separate PCB with the DRV part to evaluate at higher power levels

    As Andrew mentioned the DRV8353 and DRV8300 are both 100V parts that are suitable. The current limit is determined by the MOSFET chosen.

     

    The reason you see 15-30A current limit on the evaluation boards is due to the MOSFET chosen and due to the board design. The driver is not responsible for that as it is only used to turn on/off the MOSFETs.

     

    I would like to mention that DRV8353 is not integrated MOSFTE driver (MOSFET within the IC) but rather a gate driver (MOSFET placed outside the IC). And for higher currents you would want a gate driver since you have the option of choosing your own MOSFET.

    Thanks for your quick response and clarifying things on the gate driver.

    Currently, we are looking for a MOSFET, that would meet our requirements and yet compatible with the GATE driver output voltage. It would be greatly appreciated, if you could suggest appropriate MOSFET for our 60V 40 amp motor.

    Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for the quick response. It makes complete sense now and really appreciate for the recommendation. 

    Our ultimate objective is to develop the controller board for mass production purpose. We are looking for few more suggestions regarding DRV8353RS-EVM board including,

    1. From the above EVM user guide and quick set up documents, it is pretty clear that, we can develop our own firmware from the INSTASPIN GUI software. However, we would like to use our developed firmware for our mass production purpose. Will it be possible to go with existing Integrated chips used in the above EVM kit (FT2232H), (TMS320F28027PT) for mass production?

    2. If yes, Do we get the Embedded system IC  (TMS320F28027PT) with a bootloader? Or do you suggest any replacement (controller chip) IC, that would be compatible with your software firmware and suitable for mass production (with cost and space effective on mass production PCB)?

    3. I see the MOSFET circuit is a H-bridge type and would like to confirm with you that, the above EVM board can be used for Regenerative braking purpose?

    Thanks for quick response. While, we are waiting for the response, we got another simple question on INSTASPIN software support.

    We need more confirmation regarding TMS320F28027F and which software does it support?

    1.we have gone through the DRV8353RS-EVM user guide and INSTASPIN user guide. As per our understanding DRV8353RS-EVM board comes with TMS320F28027F(microcontroller) on its board.

                                                              

                                                              

    ->Upon Checking INSTASPIN User guide It shows as below

                                                                               

    -> TMS320F28027F device family has solution support for only INSTASPIN-FOC .                                                                

    ->But we get bit confused when it also showing that it supports both the software. (INSTASPIN-FOC and INSTASPIN-MOTION)

                                                                           

    Our main application is for sensored BLDC motor and we would like to make sure, we get the Evaluation board, that support sensored based software (INSTAPIN-MOTION).  

    So kindly confirm us whether TMS320F28027F supports INSTASPIN-MOTION or not ? because as per our understandings only INSTASPIN-MOTION software is suitable for sensorless and sensored motor.

    By turning off the high side FETS you can have the current recirculate back into the battery but please ensure that the bus can handle this.

    Yes. TMS320F28027F only supports InstaSPIN-FOC, doesn't support InstaSPIN-motion.

    So kindly confirm us whether TMS320F28027F supports INSTASPIN-MOTION or not ? because as per our understandings only INSTASPIN-MOTION software is suitable for sensorless and sensored motor.

    InstaSPIN-FOC is sensorless FOC for speed or torque closed-loop control. F2802xF, F2805xF, and F2806xF devices can support InstaSPIN-FOC.

    InstaSPIN-Motion is focusing on position and motion control with sensorless or sensored-FOC. In most cases, the InstaSPIN-Motion will use sensored-FOC to support motion control. Only F2805xM and F2806xM devices can support InstaSPIN-Motion.

    All of the C2000 devices can be used for sensored or sensorless-FOC if you don't want to use the InstaSPIN-FOC or InstaSPIN-motion and want to design your own motor control algorithm.

    If you haven't had a chance to look at the workshop material, I think this will help you get started using C2000 devices.
