How to find the phases of a BLDC motor?

Hi,

How can we identify three phases U, V and W phases of a BLDC motor if it is not labelled in BLDC motor? We are using sensor based controller to run the motor.

Please don't consider the controller or MCU. I just need to know how we can identify phases in the motor.

  • Ajay,

Are you looking to identify the phase wires and their corresponding sensor outputs?  You can spin the motor by hand, monitor the BEMF voltage and the sensor output on the oscilloscope. If the BEMF and sensor outputs are in phase, then they are from the same phase.

  • Or an easier way:

Apply small voltage at phase xy, then the rotor will turn and lock. if the Hall sensors are: x10 (Ha=x, Hb=1, Hc=0) then xy is phase AB. This is based on the knowledge that the phase current should be 90* ahead of the magnet poles.
