DRV8434A: "Stall" detection at standstill?

Part Number: DRV8434A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8452, DRV8462

Hello,

sorry, if I have overseen the thread, where this might have been already covered. Please point me to it!

Is there any stepper motor driver, which detects at standstill, that the stepper motor got turned by an external force?

Form the technical data the DRV8434A will fit our application best, but from the documentation I don't the information about the operation at standstill.

Thank you very much in advance!

Best regards,

Ingmar

  • Ingmar,

If I understand your question correctly, you are looking to detect when a stepper motor is in a holding state AND an external force moves the motor off the holding state?  The DRV8434A would not be able to detect that.

The device can be used to detect stall when the motor driver is in the DRVIVING state and a force acts on the motor to stall it, or load becomes too great and stalls motor, or motor hits an end stop.

    Ryan

  • Ryan,

yes, that is exactly what I mean: stepper motor is in a holding state AND an external force moves the motor off the holding state.

Which motor driver would detect that?

    The DRV8452?

    Thanx,

    Ingmar

  • Ingmar,

The auto torque feature of the DRV8452 would attempt to increase current to the load if the load increased due to the unexpected external force.  This could certainly be an interesting experiment.

EVMs are available for the DRV8462 (higher voltage version of the 8452).

  • Hi Ryan,

where can  I buy a few samples of the DRV8452SPWPR (or at least DRV8434SPWPR)?

I'm logged in on the TI website with my company email address, but the access to the sample request is declined.

Both (DRV8452SPWPR and DRV8434SPWPR) are currently not available at distributors or at TI directly.

The DRV8452SPWPR is not even mentioned on the DRV8452 product page. What is the status of it?

I'm currently designing a prototype pcb for a small test series. Almost finished, but now I got stucked: variants in HTSSOP-28 not available :-(

I wish you a Happy New Year!

    Best regards,

    Ingmar

  • Ingmar,

Unfortunately, we don't have any availability for the PWP variants at this time.  It will be several more months before those are released.

For now, you only have the DDW variant which is still a leaded package...just larger.

For the DRV8434SPWPR, I see quite a few in stock on our website.  2495 in inventory.  I am not sure why that is not working for you.
