DRV8434EVM: GPIO and GUI question

Part Number: DRV8434EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8434, DRV8462, DRV8462EVM

Customer is asking if there is a spare GPIO on the DRV8434 Eval Board?  Looking at the board schematic, I do not see any spare GPIOs from the MCU connected.

Second question: Does GUI support scripting? There's a greyed-out "Scripting" option under the Tools pull down menu which doesn't do anything.  We were wondering if this is an options that can be enabled somehow?

  • Hey Mark,

Thank you for your question. I have assigned it to a team member to provide feedback shortly.

    Best,

    Akshay

  • Hi Mark,

There is no GPIO with test point but there are many unused GPIOs. If you want to an available GPIO, you can use the MSP_nSLEEP pin. Remove the nSLEEP connection to the MCU and connect nSLEEP signal to 3.3V to enable the device. Another option is to use MSP_nFAULT however, you will lose the ability to see faults in the GUI (there will still be red LED on the EVM notifying when a fault occurs).

No. There are no current plans to include scripting in this GUI.

What is the customer trying to achieve? There could be a way of achieving it without scripting.

  • Hi Pablo,

Thanks for the response and your ideas of using the nSLEEP or nFAULT pins as GPIOs is a good one.  I will pass this along.

Regarding scripting, the customer is interested in having more control on stepping sequence. For example they would like to vary the number of steps in reverse mode vs forward mode and reciprocate this.  The GUI can only set steps for reciprocating both directions as a constant.

The customer is likely to move to the DRV8462 once they get the EVM as it has more current capability. I haven't looked at this GUI yet, but I assume it also does not support scripting.

The DRV8462EVM does include a scripting window.

  • Hi Pablo,

Oh, this is great.  Are there any instructions on using the scripting tool? I don't see anything in the GUI user's guide.

  • Mark,

Let me ask our GUI developer. I have personally not use this function of the GUI and is not one that it is advertised for our EVMs. I will let you know when I find the instructions.

  • Hi Mark,

    Sorry for late reply.

I checked and the scripting window is not functional on the DRV8462EVM GUI at the moment. Apologies for that.

An method to have the control scheme you want is to modify the EVM firmware or use an external controller to control the DRV.
