DRV8462EVM: GUI issue of Pre-production

Part Number: DRV8462EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8462

Hi Team,

One of my customers is planning to use the DRV8462EVM for characterization.
However, it seems that some EVMs have the Pre-production DRV8462 on them.
Also, it seems that the EVM with the Pre-production DRV8462 does not work properly with the latest GUI program.

My question is below.

As of April 19th, the stock of DRV8462EVM in the TI store is 0.
When the DRV8462EVM is available on TI store, will the DRV8462EVM contains a mass-produced DRV8462 and work correctly with the latest GUI programs?

Best Regards,
Tom

  • Hi Liu,

Thanks for contacting us with this question via this forum. You are correct all DRV8462EVMs shipped so far had pre-production silicon. This can be verified with the marking on the device which will contain "PDRV".

That said, we mentioned in the EVM UG for proper operation of the pre-production silicon based EVM the GUI v1.0.0 must be used as well as if the firmware was updated with v1.0.1 it must be updated again using the GUI v1.0.0 for proper operation - although you won't see any popup message regarding the firmware.

The below snippet from the HELP menu of the latest GUI v1.0.1 shows the differences between the previous version and the new version of the GUI. Note a firmware update will be required for compliance with production silicon, you'll see a popup window informing new firmware availability. Firmware update should be done using the 'File > Program Device' menu.

The new stock EVMs will all have production DRV8462 silicon. We expect restocking to be done within the next week or two. Meanwhile, another option to characterize with production silicon EVM will be to get free samples from TI (these will be production silicon) and rework the existing EVM applying proper temperature to solder the thermal pad well to achieve good thermal performance. This is a straight forward process. After rework with production silicon use the GUI v1.0.1 and a firmware update to have register fields compatible with production silicon.
