MCT8329EVM: No live data displayed and device burned.

Part Number: MCT8329EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MCT8316A

Hi,

I already had some board with MCT8316A and some experiance with the boards.

But I need 45..48V to dive my motor successfull at 35k RPM.

I started with 30V and all looked fine.

Setup the defualt config.

Startup is fine.

Also can control the RPM from 3K to 25K...

Only the online motor parameter are not shown. Just Motor alligned , running. No HZ.

Connected a scope on FG so I can read out the RPM.

Increased to 35V... then I was able to run at 30K RPM.

Stop all stuff...

Change to 45V switched on the power supply.

A call came in. 5 min. Motor war not running... Just connect to power supply.

Then my powersuplly went to overload ( 4A) and see the picture.

Do you have any idear what went wrong?

The device should work with 60V is correct?

  • Hi Andreas,

Eric from our team is currently out of office but will be back next week to address your question

    Best Regards,
    Andrew

  • Hi Andreas,

From the image it looks like the cap C7 (0.1 uF PVDD cap) is damaged. This device is rated up to 60V. You mentioned that at 35V you stopped the motor. While stopping the motor, did you see the Dc bus voltage overshoot? Can you share the register configurations?

    Regards,

    Vishnu

    >From the image it looks like the cap C7 (0.1 uF PVDD cap) is damaged.

Tried to clean up the black...but not sure if C7 is the problem?

    All wires are not exisiting?!

    >This device is rated up to 60V.

    >You mentioned that at 35V you stopped the motor.

was a controlled stop ( spin donw) but the motor is not that big ( no mass attached ) just the BLDC Motor with the shaft.
Did not destroyed any MCD8316 board with 30V -:)

    >While stopping the motor, did you see the Dc bus voltage overshoot?
    no.

    >Can you share the register configurations?

Yes, attached... ( Json and 7 Zip does now work?) Tried as ".txt"

I think I can't use the board any more?
The current limit was at 3A but the wire look that it is disappeared?!
And that while all was switched off! ( My Customer an I are confused!)
A option would be order a second one - but not sure if that helps -:)

  • Hi Andreas,

I reviewed the config file and everything looks okay to me. Let me consult with my colleagues and get back to you.

    Regards,

    Vishnu

  • Hi Andreas,

Apologies for the delay. Do you also see the MSP430 (encircled in red in below image) damaged on the EVM? DO you see any puncture mark on the top case of the MSP430 IC?

    Regards,

    Vishnu

  • Hi Andreas,

Please let us know if the latest response has addressed your question, or if you have further information to provide so that we can further debug. If your problem has been resolved, please help mark the thread as resolved.

    Thanks and Best Regards,
    Andrew

  • Hi, sorry for the delay...
the MSP430 all looks fine... only the MCT is complete destroyed.

  • Andreas,

The reason for this damage is because, the GCTRL voltage increases with PVDD as the source of the external FET is left floating. We would recommend either depopulating resistor R56 or moving the jumper from position 1-2 to position 5-6 (see below image for reference)

    Vishnu
