DRV8889-Q1: The output signal can still be detected on the A2 pin after the pwm signal on the step pin is disconnected

Part Number: DRV8889-Q1

Hi team,

When using the DRV8889-Q1, the motor can stop spinning when the pwm signal at the step pin is stopped, but the output signal can still be detected at the A2 pin with the motor heating up.

Could you help check this case? Thanks.

Best Regards,

Cherry

  • Hi Cherry,

This is normal behavior for stepper drivers. The stepper rotor will be held in position during this time with the holding torque. Please refer to Table 7-3. Relative Current and Step Directions in the datasheet. Depending on the microstep mode and on which STEP the STEP input is stopped the coils will be energized.

In order to reduce motor heating this hold current must be set to a desired value. Customer can do this by programming the TRQ_DAC bits. Another way will be to program DIS_OUT bit in CTRL2 Register or use DRVOFF pin to disable the H-bridge whenever the STEP pulses are stopped. In this method the holding current and holding torque will be close to zero.

I hope this gives more clarity. If no further question please close this thread. Thank you.
