MCF8315A: rotation speed of the motor

Part Number: MCF8315A

Hi team,

my customer ant to use MCF8315 to drive the motor and the rotation speed is 30r/min. Will it cause any problems in such a slow speed? Thanks!

  • Hey Zoey,

Depending on the max speed of the motor and the motor itself, we can typically support as low as 5% max speed. However, we have been able to spin at lower speeds with certain motors. It just depends on the motor you are trying to drive.

    Hi Zoey,

The min speed frequency is 3hz, and so it depends on the motor characteristic such as the number of pole pair of the rotor. Say if a motor with 4 pole pair then 1 revolution of the motor has 4 electrical cycles and at 30rev/min it has 30*4/60 = 2 hz which is lower than the spec of 3 hz and this motor will not work.

Edited: I have to recall my previous answer as it's not correct.

The input speed command (analog, pwm, frequency or I2C) will need to be profiled and so the final Speed_Ref can be down to zero. So yes, you can try to control the motor speed to 30rev/min but it depends on the motor and load characteristic, and the control parameters to have a stable speed or not.
