DRV8424: Inductive and/or capacitive load

Part Number: DRV8424

Hi team,

Our customer is using the DRV8424P as 4 independent outputs limited @250mA.

Do you have any recommendations about using them with Inductive and/or capacitive load for DECAY, TOFF and VREF pins?

During test, they noticed that for more than 100nF the DRV is in fault with Vref @ 5V, TOFF & DECAY

Do you have any suggestion ?

  • Hi Emeric,

I assume customer will need proper IFS current regulation. The DRV8424x is specifically designed for inductive loads such as a stepper motor. I am not sure what was meant by outputs limited at 250mA. Please elaborate. It will be helpful to support the customer if we could get more details about the various load characteristics, a high level block diagram or schematic will also be helpful.

Also for this point, “During test, I notice that for more than 100nF the DRV is in fault with Vref @ 5V, TOFF & DECAY”. Does this mean the load was purely capacitive with 100nF or higher? What is the application? According to the datasheet the recommended operating condition for VREFA and B is 3.3V maximum. As well as the value of the VREFx will determine the current regulation trip value. For example for 250mA VREFx should be set at 1.32 x 0.25 =  0.33V. TOFF setting depends on the load for all decay settings except Smart Tune Ripple Control (STRC). For STRC decay mode TOFF setting is ignored.
