BLDC motor and driver design - 120V

Hello, 

I am looking to use a BLDC motor to drive a fan load for a consumer product. I have a few questions about such a system and would love some help, 

- I don't see many motors or drivers that are rated for 120V. I am curious if this is just a demand reason or if there is a design limit or issue that I am not considering

- I also need help with determining whether measuring back EMF will be feasible for this application or if I need to consider estimating back EMF 

some specs that we currently have:

- 80W load

- 15000 rpm

    Thank you for posting to the Motor Driver's forum!

    The highest rated BLDC motor drivers that we offer are the DRV8300 and the DRV8353 which has an abs max of 100V.

    Due to things like back EMF or voltage spikes caused by heavy de-acceleration/braking of the motor, we recommend that the voltage rail for VM to be 25% to 50% less than the abs max spec of the driver chosen (i.e., for a device that has an abs max spec of 100V, the maximum voltage rail that we recommend would be between 50V-75V). What VM are you intending on using?

    Thanks for your quick reply. We are trying to not have to step down the voltage meaning that peak voltage would be 170V (120V rms). 

    Reason for that is space limitations for the power supply components. 

    Any thoughts on a possible solution?

  • Hi Zaid,

    Unfortunately, TI's BLDC product line does not have any devices that can support that high of a voltage requirement. However, TI does have a reference design, TIDA-00195, which features an isolated IGBT gate driver evaluation platform for 3-phase inverter systems intended for motor control applications which may be of interest to you as it is capable of supporting high voltage applications.
