DRV8251A: DRV8251A current regulation after paralleling

Part Number: DRV8251A

Hi team,

I’m configuring the DRV8251A peripheral circuit to get correct current regulation after paralleling with my customer, e.g., setting each Itrip=1.5A, and need the total current regulated @ 3A. However, they have get the result that device will regulate below 3A. Since customer use different voltage divider resistor (1% accuracy) for Vref, and different Rpropi to capture the Ipropi, I assume the resistor accuracy will cause different Itrip threshold, and internal MOSFET Rds_on will cause the current flow to two devices unevenly.

I tried to connect the Vref pin together, and use one Rpropi to capture the Ipropi. It seem the device could trigger the regulation threshold correctly: single device tripped @ Vpropi=1.65V, and paralleling devices tripped @ Vpropi=3.3V. Could you please help to confirm if this connection valid in paralleling use case?

  • Hi Sirui,

When paralleling two drivers together, the IPROPI and VREF pins should be tied together so that the current regulation triggers at the same time in both drivers. Having separate IPROPI resistors and VREF values, even when they are the same, tolerances and variations can cause desync in the regulation trip limit.

I noticed that the IPROPI resistor in the second diagram is 500kohm. Is this correct or no? IPROPI resistor should not be that high.
