DRV8462: Is it possible to drive a bipolair 3-phase stepper motor?

Hi all,

I'm just wondering if it is possible to drive a 3-phase bipolair stepper motor with the "DRV8462" driver.
When i'm looking to the two full H-bridge configurations i would say: Yes it's is possible. You only need 3 half bridges for 3-phases.
But I have no idea if it is possible with the digital core of the "DRV8462".

Hi Bert,

Thanks for posting this question. The DRV8462 has integrated indexer to drive 2-phase bipolar steppers. It will not be suitable for 3-phase stepper. However you can consider the DRV8962 which is a quad H-bridge driver with similar voltage and current specifications. You can control the half-bridges with suitable drive patterns generated by an external controller.

Thank you for the answer.
I was searching in the stepper driver categorie for a stepper motor driver.

But when i understand you correctly it isn't necessary to look only in the stepper driver categorie?
You can also look at the other categories as long as you can drive each half bridge individually?

At the moment i don't have any questions about the DRV8962 driver.

Hi Bert,

Correct. Especially if you are looking for a generic driver such as multiple half-bridge or two full-bridge drivers that we usually build for supporting a brushed DC motor or a stepper motor using an external indexer. Often times purposely built stepper drivers will have an on board indexer and typically accept STEP and DIR inputs to drive the stepper motors.
