DRV8323R: Determine Imax and Irms when calculating Vds Overcurrent Monitor Configuration and Sense Amplifier Bidirectional Configuration

Part Number: DRV8323R

Hi,

Just wish to check how to determine the Imax when calculating Vds Overcurrent Monitoring Configuration (pg 66, DRV832x 6 to 60-V Three-Phase Smart Gate Driver datasheet (Rev. D))?

Currently I'm using 1.2 times of my motor rated peak current (1.2 x 7.95A x sqrt(2)) as the Imax. Is it correct?

As for the Irms that being used to determine the Sense Amplifier Bidirectional Configuration (pg 67, DRV832x 6 to 60-V Three-Phase Smart Gate Driver datasheet (Rev. D)), does I need to add some buffer on this Irms value (maybe around 1.2 times of the motor rated current)?

Please advise.

  • Hi Kok Loong Yip,

Thank you for the question! I would not multiply your motor peak current by 1.2. If you have a value above the peak current for Imax, then no overcurrent protection will occur when you exceed the peak current for your motor. If you want to play it safe, you could have it trigger below your peak current so that you don't cause any wear and tear to the motor by hitting the end of its' operating range. For the Irms value in the Sense Amplifier Bidirectional Configuration section, the datasheet recommends using the Irms, so I would recommend to not add a buffer on this value. Please see the example in section 9.2.1.2.4.1 to get an idea of how this calculation is done. I hope this answers your questions.

    Best,

    Eli

  • Hi Eli,

Thanks for the advise. Will enquire again if I have further queries.
