DRV8833: Junction temperature

Hi Team,

The maximum case temperature for the drv8833 was tested with an IR thermometer at 121.3°C. What would the junction temperature be and how would it be calculated? The test was done in parallel mode, the current was maintained at 2.8A and the input voltage of the chip was 6V.

Could you please help check this case? Thanks,

The absolute operating junction temperature and other thermal information can be found in the datasheet under section 6 Specifications section.

More information regarding thermal metrics can be found in the Application Report below which is also available on TI.com:

Thank you for the support.

Based on RJC(top) calculation, the upper tube voltage drop for the DRV8833 is 0.337V and the lower tube voltage drop is 0.43V, then the power dissipated by the device is approximately 2.8A X (3.337V + 0.43V) = 2.1476W. Based on RJC(top), the junction temperature is approximately 122°C + 2.1476 W X 32.9°C / W = 193°C, which exceeds 150 degrees. Is this an expected temperature?

Please check the app note that David referred to. You want to use Psi-JT.....which is MUCH smaller. Case temp will be close to die temp.
