DRV8718-Q1: solenoid control

Hi Expert,

There have an example for solenoid control in DRV8718-Q1 datasheet, see below.

Normally, customer only use 1 low side to drive the solenoid. In our example, there have an additional high side disconnect switch. May I know the advantage of high side disconnect switch to drive the solenoid compare to 1 low side solution?

Hey Ethan,

Check out this Application Note: Using Motor Drivers to Drive Solenoids

Specifically 4.2 Independent Low-/High-Side Driving. The high-side FET can be controlled as a switch, and the low-side FET can be controlled by PWM. This enables connecting a floating load in between the FETs. Advantage of this setup is capability of floating load vs 1 low side solution.

The 1 low-side FET to drive solenoid you mentioned is shown in 2.1 Low-Side and High-Side Configuration.
