Would it be possible for you to clarify which exact device you are referring to so that we can answer in right context.

Having said that:

There are various devices in TMS320 family spanning multiple generation of DSP cores from TI.  TMS320C8x is first generation of DSP processor for Multi media applications, since the TI has released more powerful and advanced DSP, ARM +DSP families. For devices and parts that are discontinued alternate devices with comparison tools are suggested.
