DRV8262: DDW with heatsink on the top side to become DDV?

Part Number: DRV8262
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8244-Q1

DRV8262DDV is not available now but DRV8262DDW is available. My application requires a current is close to 16A, which means the margin is very low for DDW version. I was wondering if I could put external heatsink on the top of DRV8262DDW to push the current capacity higher. In other words, make it match DDV performance since DDV and DDW have the same die.

  • Hi Justin,

I was wondering if I could put external heatsink on the top of DRV8262DDW to push the current capacity higher.

We do not recommend exceeding the recommended operating conditions. Operating outside of these conditions may cause damage to the device.

That being said, the DRV8262 does have a peak current of 16 A, however this is only intended for a short duration and used primarily to protect the device from inrush or stall currents.

The recommended RMS current is around 10 A.

If a higher continuous current is desired we offer other integrated driver solutions that would be more suitable for this application.

The following link is to BDC motor drivers filtered by peak output current:

  • Hey Justin,

To elaborate, I think the reason this won't work is because the OCP limits are set per device package.  So the device will protect itself at >16A, not at a certain temperature.  The current scaling in DDW is also different vs DDV. VREF 3.3V in DDW is 5A and in DDV is 10A. You cannot set DDW higher than 5A IFS because of this.

As for a specific different device, check out the DRV8244-Q1 with 21-A current limit:  https://www.ti.com/product/DRV8244-Q1
