DRV8803: Recommended PWM frequency to drive solenoid valve

Hello,

I'm trying to use this DRV8803 to proportionally control this 24Vdc proportional solenoid valve: https://content2.smcetech.com/pdf/PVQ.pdf (page 6)

What is the recommended frequency to use with this solenoid? I tried at 200Hz and the valve sounds really bad.

Please see the attached application note. The app note discusses the basics on driving solenoids and gives a specific example using the DRV8803.

Hello Takuchi,

Generally we recommend driving above 20kHz to avoid the switching to generate noise within the human audible range. However, the higher the frequency, the lower the effective valve torque. Therefore, the tradeoff you will have to make is torque vs audible noise/vibration.

Hello Pablo,

thank you very much for your answer Should I use a LC filter at the output? Or I can just connect the valve directly to the low-side driver?

Hi Takuchi,

A direct connection or an LC filter can be used at the output to help eliminate noise. A filter would help reduce ripple during switching.
