DRV8705-Q1: PVDD input capacitor requirement

Part Number: DRV8705-Q1

Hi Team,

My customer is asking what is the minimum requirement of PVDD capacitor. It's seen on the datasheet that there must be a at least 10uF cap nearby. My customer wants to reduce it to one or two 4.7uF cap due to very strict cost control. Is that ok?  Also, my customer and I were wondering how these 10uF value comes from?

Thanks,

Han

  • Hello Han,

The 10 uF is the local bulk capacitor. This is a good application note for calculating the required bulk capacitance for the system (Section 1.6):

    PTHxxxxx.pdf (ti.com)

9.4 uF should be fine for the local bulk capacitance, but you can run through the calculation to make sure there is enough bulk capacitance on the board to make sure the supply voltage doesn't droop too much.

    Best,
