MCF8315A: Method to detect dry running in pump - abnormally low current/speed ratio

Part Number: MCF8315A

Hi, I am looking for a method to detect dry running in a BLDC motor pump applicaion. Dry running will damage the pump, and I'm hoping to find a method to pick up on this and bring it to a shutdown. If running dry, the current draw will drop very low at the setpoint RPM. Is there a way to detect this within the configuration, without adding an external microcontroller or circuitry?

  • Hi Joshua,

I can think of some methods but not very clean way we can try out few experiments.

Can you check what will be phase current when on different loads - Lowest expected to full load? We can think of trying No Motor fault through threshold settings.

Also please measure max speed motor can reach at full load, light load and no load. If there is significant difference which can exceed abnormal speed fault threshold setting (example 130% as minimum) then abnormal speed may get detected which can be used.

    Thanks and Best Regards,
