DRV8824: What is difference in short circuit response for new gen DRV8434?

Part Number: DRV8824
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8434, , STRIKE

Hello MD team,

I have a customer in retail automation that faced failure with DRV8824 in the past. Could you tell me the difference design concept or market failure situation between DRV8824 and recent device like DRV8434? We don’t have much detail about this, but the customer feedback is as below.

DRV8824 failure:

Output FET shorted out and broke

  • Verification showed that both LL and HH side had short brakes
  • Hey Jennifer,

Without knowing the root cause of the previous failure they've experienced it is hard to say if that has been improved.  The conditions you mention could be caused by an overvoltage event, an ESD strike, manufacturing issues, or a number of other things.  Without debugging that cause I can't really advise on whether the newer DRV8434 will have improved on them.  Our new devices implement many improvements and learnings from past devices, and often come with more features and smaller package size for the same price.

    Best,

    Jacob
