DRV8718-Q1: if GHx/GLx have short to GND protection

Part Number: DRV8718-Q1

Hi Expert,

One question from DRV8718 would like to check with you.

Does DRV8718 have GHx or GLx short to GND protection? I saw that GHx/GLx gate drive current is internally limited from datasheet. Does it mean that it will not be damaged if GHx/GLx short to GND?

Thanks!

Ethan Wen

  • Hi Ethan,

Yes, the DRV8718-Q1 offers offline short circuit and open load detection. an integrated pull-up and pull-down current source is connected on the SHx pin and connects to the external half-bridge switch node.

These diagnostics can be controlled by the associated register bits in the OLSC_CTRL register.

Check section 8.3.8.12 of the datasheet for more details on how to enable and configure these settings.

    Best,

    David

  • Hi David,

We may discuss not the same thing. I would like to check with you if GHx/GLx pin have internal short to GND protection.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Ethan,

The DRV8718-Q1 does incorporate internal diode and resistors to offers a level of protection against shorts by clamping the voltage on the gate pins. It is also recommended to use external Schottky diodes and series resistors between SHx and GND, and GLx and GND for additional protection against voltage spikes and negative transients.

    Best,

    David
