DRV8210: Effect of Overcurrent on the MTBF

Part Number: DRV8210

Assuming the DRV8210 IC is being used normally. Later if there is a sustained short on the output of the Driver IC(for a couple of hours) then will it effect the MTBF of the IC? And if it does, how will it affect DRV8210? Will it cause any damage to the IC?

  • Hi Ashish,

If the outputs are shorted, for any duration, the overcurrent protection (Iocp) limit will be reached. When this current exceeds Iocp for longer than the overcurrent deglitch time (tocp), then all FETs will be disabled. A retry time (tretry) will elapse before checking if the current has dropped below this threshold. Thermal shutdown (TSD) should be avoided due to the outputs only be enabled for the short deglitch time to check the current threshold.

The device should be able to regulate the current and protect the device from a hard short for any duration.

    Best,

    David
