DRV8873-Q1: operation of DRV8873 with reverse current from motor

Part Number: DRV8873-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8873

Hi experts.

I am currently using the DRV8873 motor driver IC to drive a DC motor. During operation, I have noticed that there is a reverse current flow of up to 2.3A from the VM pin due to the motor's back electromotive force (EMF). I would like to inquire if this behavior is considered normal for the DRV8873 IC.

  • Hi Sakai-san,

This is expected normal behavior with all H-bridges designed with MOSFETs, whether integrated in the driver or external to the driver. This is due to the body diodes of the FETs. If the brushed DC motor is mechanically back driven this would generate a voltage on VM pin. Care must be taken to make sure such situation does not take VM beyond recommended operating voltage and not violate absolute maximum ratings. Thanks.

    Regards, Murugavel
