DRV8242-Q1: Schematic review for DRV8242

Part Number: DRV8242-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8243-Q1,

Hi team,

My customer wants us to check their schematic review for DRV8242, can you please help check if it is ok?

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your questions.

Could you share customer name and application (e.g door lock, mirror ford etc). If confidential informaiton is included, please send to internal post.

By the way, I could see "max 5A" comments on schematic. DRV8242-Q1 may not be right device for thier current load profile. Please share bellow with customer. They may need to upgrade to DRV8243-Q1 or DRV8244Q1. If customer share load profile (e.g ??A peak @??msec, ??A typical @??sec. With or without PWM), I can provide our proposal.

    regards

  • Hi Shinay,

Customer used DRV8242 for driving clutch pedal, the continues current is 2.5A, peak current is 3.8A. Do you mean the DRV8242 COULD NOT Meet customer spec requirement? Need to choose DRV8243 instead? What does the datasheet mean 6A maximum?

  • Hi,

DRV8242-Q1 is not right fit product for your customer. DRV8243-Q1 should be right fit. If customer share load profile (e.g ??A peak @??msec, ??A typical @??sec. With or without PWM), I can check with thermal performance and can provide our proposal. Probably we do not need to DRV8244Q1, so DRV8243-Q1 is good enough.

6A is current level without thermal consideration. I believe your customer is familiar with this topic. Thermal is key item for motor driver. This is very common way for datasheet description not only in TI, but also other motor driver suppliers.

Automotive normally requires Ta=85C condition, then max current capability is limited by thermal.

DRV8242-Q1 can support up to 6A without OCP if no thermal.

Bottom line is customer need to move to DRV8243-Q1. One benefit is HR-QFN package is smaller than DRV8242-Q1. If customer is OK, I recommend to pick SPI variant, not HW variant. SPI variant has more flexibility. If customer do not want to use SPI, it is OK to stay with HW-variant.

Please generate new post if you have more questions for DRV8243-Q1 (Not DRV8242-Q1).

    regards
