DRV8243-Q1: Overcurrent Protection

Part Number: DRV8243-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8143-Q1

I noticed that the current protection is to detect the high-side FET, is it right?

The customer is worried one Motor wire is shorted to Vbat+.

Then there will be high current flowing through the low side FET.

If the OCP only detect the high-side FET current, Then DRV8243 can not detect the OCP.

The customer is worried about this working condition.

Can you explain this?

  • Hey Fabio,

Correct, the IPROPI current sensing is only on the high side FET as shown in the block diagram below. Same for the 1/2 bridge driver variant the DRV8143-Q1. This current sensing is used for ITRIP / current regulation.

OCP is a different feature, which is built into every FET.  So no matter how the load is connected, OCP will still trip and protect the device.  But for a HS load using just lower FET to switch you would not be able to use ITRIP regulation.

    Best,

    Jacob
