DRV10983-Q1: Startup Setting - Open to Close Loop Threshold

Part Number: DRV10983-Q1

I’ve been working with the DRV10983-Q1 IC and I’m trying to control the motor speed within the range specified by the “Open to Close Loop Threshold” setting. I’ve kept the “Close Loop Disable” checkbox selected. While I can increase the open loop speed of the motor, I’m finding it difficult to decrease it when the motor is running. Please provide insights on why I’m unable to reduce the open loop speed that’s set by the “Open to Close Loop Threshold” option? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • Hi Anirudha,

Once motor reaches to threshold speed set in open loop, it remains there. If you want to test with different speed then stop and re start with new open loop speed reference.

Remember, this is open loop where motor is driven blindly, if we need to control speed then closed loop is required.

Closed Loop Disable option is for debug purpose, in order to understand the motor we first spin the motor in open loop and then go for tuning in closed loop.

    Thanks and Best Regards,

  • Hello Venkatadri,

    Thank you for the reply.

I wanted to operate a BLDC motor at speeds nearing stall, and the "Open to Close Loop Threshold" option in the "Startup Setting" provides the means to run the motor blindly in the open loop with the DRV10983Q1 IC.

After setting the ShadowRegEn (Bit 12) in the EEPROM Programming5 register and the modification of the Op2ClsThr[4:0] field in the CONFIG4 register, I am able to set the open loop speed. When the motor is spinning, I am able to increase the open loop speed, but I am not able to decrease it.

I just wanted to confirm whether it will be possible to decrease the open loop speed when the motor is spinning. If not, why?

I look forward to your response.

    Thanks and Regards,
