DRV8234: How do I read the position feedback of ripple counting for sensorless position control?

Part Number: DRV8234
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8214,

Hello MD team,

I am currently evaluating the ripple counting feature for DRV8214 and DRV8234 but am having trouble understanding how to use the feedback in determining the position of my brushed DC motor.

How do I read the position feedback of ripple counting for sensorless position control and how does that relate to my motor?

Thanks!

  • Hey Jennifer,

The devices have a RC_OUT pin that will output a pulse for every ripple it detects.  You can use this pulse as a replacement for an encoder.

Alternately, you could read the RC_CNT register which corresponds to the numbers of ripples counted since CLR_CNT was sent to reset the count.

    Best,

    Jacob
