MCF8316A: Datasheet states pins 22-25 are NC, but layout example and EVM have them tied to AGND

Part Number: MCF8316A

Hi,

As the title states, my question is regarding the NC pins 22-25 on the motor driver IC. They are stated as No Connect without any (that I could see, please tell me if I've missed it somewhere) indication that they should be tied to anything. Yet in the Evaluation Module (which is also shown as a layout example on the datasheet) they are tied to AGND.

I'm designing a custom board for this IC and trying to understand what the guidelines are regarding these pins. Any clarification on what the implications of leaving these floating vs having them tied to Analog Ground are would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Arvids

  • Hi Arvids,

The NC pins are connected to GND in both the EVM and layout guidelines to improve thermal performance. The thermal performance improvement by connecting the NC pins to GND is minimal in comparison to adjusting the switching frequency, slew rate, or having a lot of copper GND area on your PDB but it can help. So, if you do not connect the NC pins to GND in favor of layout there should not be a significant difference in the performance of the MCF8316A.

    Regards,

    Joshua
