DRV8880: DRV8880PWP, DRV8880PWPR future availability

Part Number: DRV8880
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8886

Tool/software:

I have been asked to upgrade a PCB that uses the DRV8880PWP device, I see this product code is being phased out (last time buy).
The product page in question suggests using two alternative devices instead of the P/N DRV8880PWPR which appears to be
still ACTIVE at the moment.

Since the card I am going to update will have to be supported for a long time, it is better to change the DRV8880 device with
the DRV8886 as suggested by the product page (with the necessary layout changes of course) or I can use
the DRV8880PWPR (which should be pin-to-pin compatible)?

Best regards,
Michele Santucci

  • Hey Michele,

The PWPR is just the Reel version of the device - TI is phasing out the Tube and Partial-Reel orderables.  The device will still come in a reel cut to the size you order, it's the same device as always.  Basically just simplifying the package options that we offer.

Both DRV8880 and DRV8886 will be around for a long time - See TI's typical lifecycle, we typically don't discontinue anything until no one is buying it: https://www.ti.com/support-quality/quality-policies-procedures/product-life-cycle.html

Now if you're interested in using a newer device, I think you'll find that DRV8434 gives you more voltage, current, protection features, and better microstepping at a lower price. DRV8424 will be even cheaper but is 35V instead of 40V.  I would recommend using these instead of either DRV8880/86.

    Best,

    Jacob
