DRV8849: Braking of the stepper motor using DRV8849.

Part Number: DRV8849

Tool/software:

Hi all,

We are using DRV8849 in our design and would like to achieve braking functionality when the stepper motor connected at the output is not rotating. Please suggest how we can achieve the same.

  • Hi Chirag,

In stepper motors this is known as hold torque when the motor is not spinning. When the STEP pulses stop and the pin returns to logic LOW the indexer holds in the last position. The indexer table is provided in Tables 8.3 to 8.5 in the datasheet depending on the step mode used. The holding torque at 45, 135, 225 and 315 degrees would be maximum because both windings will be energized with 71% of the set target current using VREF. In full-step mode these are the only positions available so every stop will have maximum hold torque. I hope this information will be helpful with your implementation.
