Hello Team,

We are using the DRV8705SQRHBRQ1 motor driver in our application. We have already reviewed the schematic and layout from you, and our board was working fine. However, during testing, our board blew up and would not power on. After debugging, we found that the VREF pin (pin 16) of the U18 driver IC was shorted to the ground (see attached schematic).

We reworked the board by replacing the motor driver with a new DRV8705S. Now, the board powers up successfully, but we encountered an error during driver initialization. The error message is as follows: 'Config IC_CTRL read write stage: 4400, Read: E486'. Please refer to the attached image for details.

Could you please help us resolve this error? Additionally, what could be causing the error mentioned above?

Looks like a communication error. If I'm decoding this right, that means they tried to read from the IC_CTRL register, and got back a fault signal and UnderVoltage signal, along with EN_DRV=1.

I bet the UnderVoltage warning is what your program is throwing the warning about.

This could be caused by PVDD undervoltage or VCP undervoltage - reading the IC_STAT_2 register would tell you which.

Between this warning and your previous damaged device I would investigate your logic power supply and make sure it is behaving within spec.

Hello Jacob,

Thank you for your quick response.

We have resolved the previous error, but now we are getting the following error message. Please refer to the attached image for details:

'Status Reg: 0x80c1, Error Reg: 0x8'.

GateDriver0 Status:

Error on Gate Driver Status Reg1: 0x0
Error on Gate Driver Status Reg2: 0x0
Error on Gate Driver Status Reg3: 0x0

We observed that the U4 SO pin voltage of the driver is 0V and we are not connecting any load.

Can you please verify that your SPI format follows the timing requirements and the SPI Mode in the datasheet?

Please find below the SPI waveforms and timing.

tHI_nSCS: 157ns

tCLKH: 1.75us

tCLKL: 1.78us

tH_SDI: 740ns

tCLK: 3.56us

Hey Sonali, give me another two days to look into this. I don't see any response at all on SDO, which makes me think this communication isn't working with the device. Do you have an EVM on hand that you can compare the SPI signals with?

The SPI format looks good, in the proper mode. Have you successfully resolved the recent issue?
