DRV8962EVM: Thermal issue

Part Number: DRV8962EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8962, DRV8962VEVM

Tool/software:

Hi Team,

My customer is testing DRV8962, and meet some technical issue which need your support to solve as below.

What is their expected spec esp. in thermal performance? ~ We hope that at an ambient temperature of 45 degrees, the motor drive with 5A can use the heat sink to make the chip work normally

Are they connecting two DRV8962s in parallel? ~ No

Are they hitting Overtemperature Thermal Shutdown (OTSD)? ~ No

What is the load, and how much RMS current are they drawing? ~ 1.6A

The current waveform on the motor is abnormal, not a sine wave. Ours is a three-phase stepper motor. The motor is shaking abnormally.

Thanks.

William

  • Hi William,

Please describe the thermal issue mentioned in the subject. The DRV8962 in DDW package cannot be used with a heatsink. The DRV8962 in DDV package will support a top mounted heatsink. See details with the DRV8962VEVM and its Altium files.

Regarding "The current waveform on the motor is abnormal, not a sine wave. Ours is a three-phase stepper motor. The motor is shaking abnormally." based on the schematic in the associated e2e post customer is generating their own current waveform using their MCU firmware and the current sensing and regulation mechanism of the DRV8962. The scope image shows a regulated current IFS with trapezoidal waveform. Was the customer generating sinewave? Please share the voltage waveforms input to VREF-X and VREF-Y. I assume these were sinewave outputs from the MCU.
